PRACTICAL GUIDE

Understanding image formats.

Learn which image format works best for your photos, graphics, and everyday projects.

JPG, PNG, and WebP

JPG is the classic standard for photographs and camera shots where universal compatibility matters most, though it does not support transparent backgrounds. PNG uses lossless compression to keep crisp edges, text, screenshots, and alpha transparency intact. WebPcombines the best of both worlds for websites and apps — supporting both photographic compression and transparent backgrounds at noticeably smaller file sizes.

What makes AVIF different?

AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video compression standard. It often achieves smaller file sizes than both JPG and WebP while preserving smoother gradients and full transparency. While all current browsers support AVIF, some older desktop software and legacy upload forms still expect JPG or PNG, making quick format conversion helpful depending on where your image will be used.

HEIC, TIFF, and BMP explained

HEIC and HEIF are used by iPhones and modern cameras to store high-quality photos in half the space of a JPEG, but many Windows apps and websites cannot open them directly. TIFF is favored in scanning, printing, and publishing workflows, while BMP stores raw uncompressed pixel data for legacy desktop software. Converting these formats to JPG, PNG, or WebP makes them easy to share anywhere.

Transparency, quality, and metadata

When you convert a transparent PNG, WebP, AVIF, or GIF into an opaque format like JPG or BMP, transparent regions are filled with a solid background color (white by default, or any color you choose). Lossy formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF) let you trade a tiny amount of detail for much smaller files. Because conversion decodes and re-encodes pixel data directly in your browser canvas, embedded camera EXIF and GPS metadata are automatically stripped for privacy.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Helpful answers.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Convert HEIC to JPG by adding a supported HEIC file and choosing JPG as the output format. Review the available settings, convert and download the result. Camera-file variants and device memory can affect compatibility; HEIC is an input format rather than an export choice.

Which input and output formats can I use?

Inputs include JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF; outputs are JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, ICO. HEIC, HEIF, TIFF and GIF are readable inputs, not export choices. Supported variants still depend on decoding capabilities and available device memory.

Will converting PNG to JPG remove transparency?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas must become a solid background during conversion. Choose the background color before exporting. Use PNG, WebP or AVIF instead when the destination supports that format and you need transparent areas.

Should I choose JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF?

JPG is widely compatible for photos, while PNG suits crisp graphics and transparent images. WebP and AVIF can provide efficient compression with transparency, but the destination must support them. Compare the output and choose the format your website, app or recipient accepts.

Can animated or multi-page images be converted?

The converter creates static image outputs rather than preserving an animation or exporting an entire document. Animated GIF processing requires acknowledgement and uses the first frame. For a supported multi-page TIFF, choose the page to convert; output is one selected image, subject to decoding and memory limits.
