Practical guide

Understanding image rotation.

Learn how to rotate, flip, and straighten images while keeping their dimensions and quality under control.

Rotating images explained

A 90° turn to the right fixes a photo that was taken sideways, a 90° turn to the left does the opposite, and a 180° rotation turns an upside-down picture the right way up. A 270° rotation is the same as 90° to the left. These quarter turns move every pixel to an exact new position, so the image is simply re-oriented: its width and height swap for 90° and 270° turns, and nothing is stretched or cropped.

Rotation vs. flipping

Rotating spins a picture around its centre, so text and faces keep reading the same way, just at a different angle. Flipping creates a mirror image instead: a horizontal flip swaps left and right, and a vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Flipped text appears reversed, so use it for mirrored selfies or product shots rather than for fixing orientation. Pockenta flips first and rotates second, and you can combine both.

Custom angles and canvas size

Straightening a slightly tilted horizon with a custom angle leaves the corners of the rotated picture outside the original rectangle. “Expand Canvas” enlarges the canvas so the whole image stays visible, adding empty corners. “Keep Original Canvas” keeps the original width and height and crops whatever extends past the edges. Empty corners stay transparent in PNG and WebP files, while JPG fills them with the background colour you choose, because JPG cannot store transparency.

Image quality and metadata

Rotating an image in the browser decodes it, redraws it, and encodes it again. For JPG and WebP this re-encoding can slightly change the file size and quality, so keep an original if you need an untouched copy. PNG stays lossless. Camera orientation tags are applied once while the image is opened, and the saved file has its pixels in the correct orientation. Other metadata such as EXIF details is generally not carried over into the new file.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Helpful answers.

How do I rotate an image 90 or 180 degrees?

Use Rotate Left 90°, Rotate Right 90° or Rotate 180° to set the orientation. Apply the operation and download the processed image to save the new orientation. Keep the original as a backup; the export may be re-encoded rather than lossless.

What's the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating turns the image around its center. Flipping mirrors it horizontally or vertically, changing the direction in which its contents face. You can combine both operations, but check text, logos and other directional details in the preview before saving.

Can I straighten an image using a custom angle?

Use Custom Rotation & Canvas to enter a small angle and straighten a tilted photo. Review the canvas mode and background before applying it. A non-right-angle rotation can resample the image and introduce empty areas around its edges.

Why do blank corners appear after rotating?

An angled image does not fill every corner of an expanded rectangular canvas. Expand Canvas keeps the whole image visible, using transparency for PNG or WebP or a background color for JPG. Keep Original Canvas retains the original dimensions but crops portions that extend beyond its edges.

Can I rotate several images together?

Select multiple supported images and use the all-images edit scope to apply a shared rotation or flip. Use the selected-image scope for a different adjustment to one file. Review the results, then download individual images or the completed batch as a ZIP.
