Practical guide

Understanding image cropping.

Learn how to crop pictures, choose the right aspect ratio, and keep your images looking their best.

What image cropping means

Cropping removes the areas outside a selected rectangle, helping you improve composition or choose a useful shape. Resizing scales an image to different dimensions; cropping removes pixels. Use Image Resizer after cropping if you need an exact display size.

Understanding aspect ratios

An aspect ratio describes width compared with height. Choose 1:1 for a square, 4:3 for landscape, 3:4 for portrait, 16:9 for wide images, or 9:16 for vertical images. A locked ratio keeps the shape consistent as you adjust the crop.

Cropping for social media and websites

Frame profile photos, square or portrait posts, website banners, thumbnails, and vertical content around the part that matters. These presets are convenient proportions. Check the destination’s requirements when you need specific dimensions.

Image quality and resolution

A tight crop leaves fewer pixels and less usable resolution. Enlarging a small crop later can introduce blur. Keep enough detail for your intended use. Export re-encodes the image, which can change compressed quality, file size, and metadata.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Helpful answers.

How do I crop an image to a specific aspect ratio?

Choose an aspect ratio such as square, portrait or widescreen, then adjust the crop selection around the area you want to keep. The ratio locks the selection’s shape. Use Free when you want to set its width and height independently.

What's the difference between cropping and resizing?

Cropping removes the parts of an image outside your selection. Resizing changes its pixel dimensions and can keep the whole picture. Crop to improve framing; use the Image Resizer when you need a particular width or height for the finished image.

Can I crop several photos to the same ratio?

Select a fixed ratio and use Apply Ratio to All to give the images a consistent shape. Each image keeps its own crop position, so review every selection before exporting. Applying a ratio does not give every source image identical output pixel dimensions.

How do I crop an image for a square profile picture?

Choose Square 1:1 and move or resize the selection to frame the subject. Leave some space around faces or important details because the destination may display the picture in a circle. If you also need exact pixel dimensions, resize the cropped result afterward.

Does cropping reduce image quality or resolution?

Cropping leaves fewer pixels because the area outside the selection is removed. A tight crop can therefore have less usable resolution for printing or later enlargement. Export also re-encodes the image, which may affect quality, file size and metadata; keep your original.
